Black GrandParents & Toddler HipHop

Black Grandparents & Toddler Hip-Hop provides Black grandparents aged 55 and older, who are raising grandchildren under 5, with a culturally enriching program that fosters intergenerational bonding, community connection, and cultural pride through music, dance, and shared experiences, while creating opportunities to connect with other grandparents who share similar caregiving roles.

Black Grandparents & Toddler Hip-Hop (BGTHH)

Black Grandparents & Toddler Hip-Hop (BGTHH) is a culturally enriching, short-term engagement project designed specifically for Black grandparents aged 55 and older who are raising children under 5 years old. Recognizing the vital caregiving role of Black grandparents—38.2% of whom are responsible for the care of their grandchildren—this program creates opportunities for community connection, intergenerational bonding, and cultural celebration.

This 6-week program features weekly 90-minute sessions where grandparents and children participate together in activities inspired by the 9 Elements of Hip-Hop, such as Breakin’, Graffiti Art, and Beatboxing. Each session emphasizes virtues like resilience, confidence, and service, fostering a safe and empowering space for families. Sessions begin with a shared community meal, allowing grandparents to connect, build relationships, and share experiences before engaging in music and movement activities led by skilled instructors specializing in early childhood development and Hip-Hop.

Program Impact

BGTHH addresses the unique needs of Black grandparents by offering a culturally affirming space to connect with others who share similar caregiving experiences. Grandparents aged 55 and older often face challenges of isolation and limited access to culturally relevant programs, making these interactions critical for fostering mutual support and sharing caregiving strategies.

In addition to strengthening social bonds, the program equips grandparents with tools to support positive identity development in their grandchildren through music, dance, and play. Families leave the program with a stronger sense of community, connections to other families, and a shared commitment to celebrating their cultural heritage and their grandchildren's potential.
